"Mahalaya means the beginning of Durga Puja, the biggest Bangali's festival, the arrival of Devi Durga on earth". Mahalaya means the end of pitripakshya and the beginning of matripakshya. Durga Puja, the biggest Bangali's festival in the world, basically bangali's Durgapuja started on that day. It is said that on Mahalaya there was a war between the Asuras and the Gods.

On the day of Mahalaya, pitripakshya ends and matripakshya begins. Durga Puja is basically begins on that day. It is said that in the days of Mahalaya there was a great war between the Asuras and the Gods. This Mahalaya is very important in Hindu Dharmashastra. Mahalaya plays a very important role in Hindu theology.
On the day of Mahalaya, tarpan is also practiced for fathers. On this day eyes are donated to the idol of Devi Durga. The word Mahalaya literally means great temple or ashram. In this case, Goddess Durga is the symbol of that great temple. According to the Puranas, a demon named Mahishasura pleased Brahma by his penance and obtained the boon of immortality and pleased Brahma to grant Mahishasura the boon of immortality as a result of which Mahishasura became immortal. But at that time it was said that only his defeat to any female force would result in his death. When the gods were fed up with the oppression of the Asuras, the Trishakti Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar created a female power. She is the Mahamayarupi Devi Durga. Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura with the weapons given by the gods. For this reason, this festival is also considered as a symbol of victory of good energy by destroying bad energy.
